Joanie & Harry have hearts

Writer's picture: Zoe CunninghamZoe Cunningham

Joanie knew not

Of her thumb's effect

On the sweet loving heart

Of Harry Le Fleck

On the train home

She'd tap her right thumb

To the beat of a song

On her tuckerbox drum

Up to the skies

Her morse code would beam

Bounce back off the moon

And enter his dreams

Harry saw sights

In his far-away slumber

But he knew not one thing

Of sweet Joanie's thumper

He just saw dimples

And one golden smile

For which he would travel

More than two million miles

But her signals were strong

On one fateful day

When he laid eyes upon her

And his heart went astray

Each string snapped tight

With a zap and a zazzle

She floored the kind fellow

With her spark and her dazzle

He knew there and then

That Joanie was fated

To be his true love

So his chance he created

He rapped out a tune

On a book with his thumb

Beamed a code up to space

That bounced back off the sun

It zapped at her heart

When their codes did collide

Joanie looked up and saw Harry

Now they tap side by side.

I recognise the Whadjuk Noongar people as the Traditional Owners and first storytellers of this beautiful place I call home. I pay my respects to their elders past and present and acknowledge the deep, continuing culture and the irreplaceable contribution all First Nations people make to the life of this country.
