Is it fair to say that not all artists are created equal? I mean, there are musicians, yeah, the kind who tinker and toil, and they make many tremendous things, beautiful things - things that I certainly cannae make myself - and then, then there are these creatures, these magicians, who exist beyond all bounds of originality and exceptionality. They are, to me, the most sacred of artists, because they dwell in and they create from, another realm entirely. They visit us, they mingle with the repressed and inhibited masses, to share the fruits of their labour, and to usher us forth for a few fine moments into the unfathomable beauty of their own resplendent galaxies.

For me, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are two such artists. They have the cosmic touch. They’ll saturate you in something otherworldly; they’ll make your skin pulse with electrical currents. You don’t just hear their music - you can feel it, you can breathe it in.

For years I’ve been captivated by their supernatural creations, and tonight I was at last fortunate enough to bear witness to them and their fellow Bad Seeds in sublime live performance. They did not disappoint. Oh, glory! So glory! It was melody and poetry! Sprechstimme! Real and far away! Tempest and sweet psithurism waltzing side by side!

Even when Cave missed a beat or mixed up his lyrics, you weren’t really sure if he'd done so by accident or purpose – the man and his band are unimpeachable! They move together as if they are one! I gush, I know. But me, oh my, they were immaculate. They played The Weeping Song!! They were the very cosmic magicians that I speak of!

Do they do it for the sake of art and beauty? Do they do it for the fame and fortune? Do they do it for love, or just because they can’t stop? I do not care. Just that they do it at all is, quite simply, all right by me.

I recognise the Whadjuk Noongar people as the Traditional Owners and first storytellers of this beautiful place I call home. I pay my respects to their elders past and present and acknowledge the deep, continuing culture and the irreplaceable contribution all First Nations people make to the life of this country.
